The following is in response to the letter in this issue from PA:
Hello...,
Here is an excerpt from John Gill himself,
It is but one, there is not another, as the apostle says, (Gal 1:6,7), the same gospel which was in the beginning, and will be to the end of the world, the same under. the Old Testament as under the New; the subject of it, Christ and salvation by him; the doctrines of it, of justification, remission of sins, &c. the same, only now more clearly revealed; then it was in types and figures, now more plainly set forth, and more clearly and fully expressed; the same was preached by Christ and his apostles, and [Note..] by all faithful ministers since, and will be to the end of time; for it is true of the gospel what is said of Christ, it is "the same yesterday, today, and for ever", (Heb 13:8).
It is called, from the objects of it, the gospel of the circumcision, and the gospel of the un-circumcision, (Gal. 2:7) not that the gospel of the one is different from that of the other; it is the same gospel, only dispensed to different persons, the circumcised Jews and the uncircumcised Gentiles; it was first ordered to be preached to the Jews, and to them only, in Christ's lifetime; after his death and resurrection he enlarged the commission of his disciples, and sent them forth to preach the gospel to [Note...] every creature, both Jews and Gentiles; yet the special revelation and application of it are made only to some; to some it is the savor of life unto life, to others the savor of death unto death; there are some to whom God would make it known; it was his determinate pleasure to make known the riches of the glory of the mystery of it; to others it is hid, even to the wise and prudent, while it is revealed unto babes; of which no other reason can be given, but the sovereign will and pleasure of God, (2 Cor. 2:16 4:3 Col. 1:27 Mt 11:25,26). #1
I notice that when people make that kind of an accusation against John Gill or any of the other Gospel Standard preachers - they never provide any citations stating something like, John Gill made the following statement in his work on the gospel, "The gospel should never be preached because, etc, etc, etc, p. 235."
The accusations are flowing freely all over the place - BUT - the documentation is no where to be seen.
Hopefully this will be of some help. God willing, I'll send you the booklet that you requested.
By Grace Alone,
Tony
What hath the gospel preached with the Holy Ghost, sent down from heaven into your souls, taught you? Hath it taught you your sinnership? Hath it taught you that you must anchor on Christ alone, without works? Hath it taught you to inquire of God whether you are a sheep or a goat; an elect soul, or a reprobate one; a vessel of wrath, or a vessel of mercy; eternally justified, or eternally condemned? Whether you are predestinated to be at the left hand for hell, or predestinated to be at the right hand for heaven, "at the day of doom?" Has your mind been stunned out of the infernal mazes of universal redemption? Do you believe there are sheep and goats from your own experience? Has sin revived in you? (Rom. 7:9) Have you ever been shown the hell in your heart? Has the lid of your heart ever been taken off by the Spirit of God? Are you cursed, or blessed? Damned, or saved? Judge yourself, if the Spirit enables you, by what Ezekiel says, "Cursed is the pot whose scum is in it." (Ezek. 24:6) Is your scum in you? Or, are you brought to lament, weep, mourn, sigh, and beat on your heart, day by day, very deeply indeed, saying, "O wretched man that I am?" (Rom. 7:24) What is the voice of your conscience, what is the voice of your heart? Yes, or No, to these questions? God does not want any one to mock him; he has mockery enough offered to him by the swarms and herds of parsons and professors of all denominations, without you helping them. Let your honest conscience speak out; what are you,--a self-made Christian, or one made by God? Are you a crab, or a sprout and twig in the glorious elect apple tree the Lord Jesus Christ? Do you know what the anointing is which our text speaks of, or are you a tree destitute of sap, whom the Lord hath cursed? What are you, or where are you?
We live in a day of religious fancies. Ideal saints and theoretical Christians are found on every hand. "Rejoicing novices" abound; but "groaning veterans" are thinly strewn in these days of godless profession. To all the elect of God, but despised of men, a sympathizing Savior says, "Ye are they that have continued with Me in all My temptations." (Luke 22:28) The seven times' heated furnace and the surging flood, the scorching flame and the deep waterfloods, the barren heath and the dreary dungeon must all be experienced by the followers of the suffering Savior. The lot of the Master which He had to the full, ay, without measure, must be the servant's in measure. He who is blessed with the high honor of keeping company with Jesus must bear the cross before He wears the crown. The soldier who marches to victory with the great Captain of salvation must first endure hardness in the conflict. Throughout the whole range of Divine revelation and spiritual experience you see the saint to be a man of temptation, trial, and tribulation. Sufferings and sorrows of every shape and name attend him all the way through the wilderness. Now he is bowed down, then he experiences a gracious lift from his Elder Brother's hand. Now mourning under a deep sense of sin, then rejoicing with the sweet experience of pardoning mercy. Now assailed by Satan's fierce temptations, then encouraged with the enjoyment of restoring and preserving grace. Now begging at Mercy's door, then leaning and feasting upon the bosom of Everlasting Love. When sin and guilt distress the conscience, when repeated trials bow down the spirits, "when sore afflictions crush the soul," when headaches and heartaches distract the mind, when losses and crosses are endured, when temptations and sufferings abound, when the persecuting sneer annoys, when disappointments depress, when base and cruel misrepresentations disturb one's peace, and groveling ingratitude tries the patience, then, if nothing can warm and cheer the heart but the presence and sympathy of Jesus, there is a blessed evidence of the sufferings of Christ abounding in us.
My soul, hast thou ever remarked the peculiar glory of those scriptures, which comprise within a small compass all the persons of the Godhead, as concurring and co-operating in the grand business of salvation? No doubt, all scripture is blessed, being given by inspiration of God; but there is a peculiar blessedness in these sweet portions, which at one view, represent the Holy Three in One, unitedly engaged in the sinner's redemption. My soul, ponder over this divine passage, in thy Savior's discourse, as thus: who is the Him here spoken of, but the Lord Jesus? And whom but God the Father could seal Christ? And with whom was Christ sealed and anointed, but by God the Holy Ghost? Would any one have thought, at first view, that in seven words, such a blessed testimony should be given to the glorious foundation-truth of the whole bible? "For him hath God the Father sealed". Precious Jesus! Enable me to behold thy divine authority as the warrant of faith in this gracious act of thy Father. And while I view thee as infinitely suited for my poor soul, in every state and under every circumstance, let my soul find confidence in the conviction that the validity of all thy gracious acts of salvation is founded in the seal of the Spirit. Yes, thou dear Lord, it was indeed the Spirit of Jehovah that was upon thee, when thou was anointed to "preach the gospel to the poor, to heal the broken in heart, to give deliverance to the captive, and the restoring of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, and to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord." And art thou, dearest Lord, thus held forth, and thus recommended by the grand seal of heaven, to every poor sinner who feels a conscious want of salvation? Oh then help, Lord, by thy blessed Spirit, all and every one of this description, so to receive a sealed Savior, as to rest in nothing short of being sealed by him; and while every act of love, and every tendency of grace proclaims thee, blessed Jesus, as "Him whom God the Father hath sealed," so let every act of faith, and every tendency of the soul, in the goings forth after thee, be expressive of the same earnest longings as the church, of being sealed and owned by thee, when she cried out," Set me as a seal upon thy heart, as a seal upon thine arm; for love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave; the coals thereof are coals of fire, which hath a most vehement flame. "
PA: Please send me this [The Doctrine Of Imputed Righteousness...John Gill]. Could you tell me if their is any substance that Gill had Hyper-Calvinist insights in his theology such as there is no need for missions or preaching the gospel to the unregenerate.

RE: John Gill - Perhaps his detractors have evidence that Mr. Gill would go around asking people if they were unregenerate, so that he would know not to preach the gospel to them? "Excuse me, my name is John Gill and I would like to know if you are unregenerate?" Or maybe they have a work of his titled, "Of Not Preaching the Gospel to The Unregenerate," While we’re on the subject, wouldn’t Mr. Gill need to conduct some missions to discover who the unregenerate were? Hmm...
